Lesson Plan: Coordinating Breath and Tone
Teach your students four different tone onsets in singing for greater control and flexibility
The way we approach the beginning of a note can affect what happens afterwards: poor tonal quality, breath control, or dynamic variation
A structured Lesson Plan on how to coordinate breath and tone in singing, including four different tone onsets
created by Vocal Process Accredited Teacher Anne Leatherland
This Lesson Plan tackles that important moment - the beginning of a voiced sound. With inexperienced students the tone 'onset' can be hit and miss, and even experienced students can lack variation in their singing. This lesson will get the students in touch with their vocal folds in a safe and practical way. It will give them the control they need and also help them explore new sound qualities.
This 60-90 minute Lesson Plan includes the following topics:
Jargon Buster - different names for the same tone onsets
Ideas for Warm ups (preparing for fine motor control skills)
Ways to start a tone - group practical exploration
Applying the onsets in a sample song
Useful facts - three different behaviours of the vocal folds, four different breath patterns
Brainstorming
Task
Watchpoints
The Lesson Plan is aimed at group teaching, but would work equally well as a section in two one-to-one singing lessons
Each Lesson Plan contains:
Aims
- so you can see where the lesson can fit into your curriculum
Duration

Differentiated Learning Outcomes
