Can't find good songs for your musical theatre male students? This essential songlist database resource has done the heavy lifting for you. Vocal Process Accredited Trainer Kate Gavaghan has compiled a list of 250 songs for men, to complement her first list of 200+ musical theatre songs for women.
Each song has the following information:
- Song title
- Year Written
- Show Title/Artist
- Grade Level
- Vocal Range
Song title - the best place to start with the sorting process (song title alphabetically), and the best place to look for information on the songs you already know.
Year Written - this is so useful for exams, auditions or programming performances. Need a pre-1950s song for drama college auditions? The songlist includes 41 songs for men pre-1950 from 21 different composers. Need suggestions for a song from the last 20 years? There are over 80 to choose from.
Genre - the songlist includes a variety of genres including American MT, British MT, Film (including Disney), Vaudeville and more.
Composer - a list of the composers, from Frank Wildhorn to Jason Robert Brown, Stephen Sondheim to Dan Gillespie Sells and Benj Pasek, all completely searchable and sortable
Lyricist - words before music? Check out the lyricists in the list from Don Black and Howard Ashman to Andrew Lippa, Marc Shaiman and Gary Barlow
Show Title/Artist - shows well-known (Book of Morman, Chess, Sweeney Todd) and less well-known (Big River, Big Fish, Bring It On). Where the song is a standalone item, Kate lists the artist who wrote or sang it originally.
Grade Level - a grading based on the listings by different exam boards as well as Kate's own experience of hundreds of exams. Songs are included from Grade 3 level to Diploma standard. NB There are no age guidelines because many different ages use the same songs in exams and competitions.
Style - when you need a ballad or an uptempo to complete your songlist, check out the Style column: everything from Ballad Legit through Mid Tempo Character to Uptempo Contemporary pop/rock.
Vocal Range - divided into suggested voice type: Young Voice, Tenor, High Baritone/Tenor, Baritone, Bass/Baritone, Bass. Since many of these songs can be sung by boys in voice change (whose range can change weekly), we've included the actual notes in the original score, numbered using middle C as C4. So "Love To Me" from Adam Guettel's The Light In The Piazza is listed as Baritone D3-F#4.
Notes for performance and teaching - brief suggestions for casting, teaching and performance with recommendations to adjust keys if necessary.
REMEMBER you can do complex filters such as an American song, post 1990, for baritone going no higher than F# (there are 32 to choose from).
This is a great resource for new AND experienced teachers of musicals. There were even songs in the list that Gillyanne and Jeremy didn't know!
This is a digital download and is available immediately - look for the link in your confirmation email to get access to the download. This songlist will arrive as a csv spreadsheet, which most spreadsheet programmes can open without problems. You can filter, sort and search the list to your heart's content.
Add this to your shopping cart, use the songs in your lessons, then send us your thoughts (and new suggestions!).
